Hong Kong National Geopark was opened in November 2009. Different stakeholders are holding different opinion on Geopark. Do the setting up of Hong Kong Geopark achieve education, conservation and the principle of sustainable development? Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre and Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong, will jointly organize the captioned program for students to investigate the current social issue. In combine with Hing Chun Heuk Seven Villages in New Territories will organize cultural activities in 2010, students can experience more rural culture through the program. The details of which are as follows:



Program Objectives

1.Enhance students’ knowledge on the setting up, planning, development and geology conservation on Hong Kong Geopark.

2.Investigate the impacts of the development of Hong Kong Geopark to education, conservation and sustainable development.

3.Strengthen students’ understanding and knowledge on individual enquiry study.



Competition Details

Each team should participate the briefing session and the field visit for collecting information.  Each team should employ the principle of independent enquiry study for setting up an enquiry question on Geopark issue. Each team should finish one independent enquiry study report. The outstanding teams will present the report on 12th March 2011 (Sat) at Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre for the final judgment.



Report Format

Participating teams can use any format to do the report, such as written report, performance, or multi-media. If using performance or multi-media, participating teams should attach 1,000 words for briefly introducing the report content.



Target students

Senior form students who study Liberal Studies, Geography or Tourism & hospitality.



Quota

50 teams, first come first serve. Each team should form by 4 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education students of the same school. In order to let more schools to join the competition, the 1st participating team of each school will be accepted. The 2nd participating teams of each school will enroll by drawing.

Briefing Session

Date: 23rd October, 2010 (Sat)

Time: 9am -12:30pm

Place: Tsang Pik Shan Secondary School (Please see attached map)



Field investigation

Date: 29th October, 2010 (Fri) or 30th October, 2010 (Sat)

Time: 8:30 am -5:30pm

Place: Lai Chi Wo, N.T.

Quota: 120 per day

Remarks: Lai Chi Wo village will organize rural cultural activities on these two dates, the field study date for each team will arrange by drawing.



Report Submission

Each team should submit the report on or before 15th February 2011 (Tue) to Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre by hand or by post (date will count according to post stamp). Please save the multi-media report in CD and send the CD to Ho Koon Centre, 101 Route Twisk, Tsuen Wan, N.T.

Presentation and judgment

The outstanding teams will present the report on 12th March 2010 (Sat) at Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre for the final judgment.

Prizes and Certificates

Champion, 1st runner up, 2nd runner up and 7 merit awards will be given to outstanding teams. Book coupons will be awarded for each prize. Certificates of participation will be issued to each participant who has completed the competition.
